Great Books

A random current list of recommendations…
(linked books are available free in digital form)
James Joyce – Ulysses (yes, you should read it – actually, get the audio book and listen)

Peter Hoeg – Borderliners (my favorite book on “Special Education”)

F. Scott Fitzgerald – The Great Gatsby (I’m not sure if anyone has ever assembled English more perfectly)

John Dos Passos – The U.S.A. Triology: The 42nd Parallel, 1919, The Big Money (Watch the post-modern novel get invented)

Mark Haddon – The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time (talk about discovering an original narrator…)

Seamus Deane – Reading in the Dark (perhaps too much influence on me)

Virginia Woolf – Mrs. Dalloway (everyone should read Woolf at least once)

James Joyce – Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

John Dos Passos – Three Soldiers

Mary Shelley – Frankenstein (one of the losses of not really reading til late in life is waiting so long to discover the greatest works of literature…)

Erich Maria Remarque – All Quiet on the Western Front

Anthony Swofford – Jarhead

Seamus Heaney – Door into the Dark

Jim Carroll – Fear of Dreaming

Gregory Corso – Gasoline (this made me love poetry)
